2011 European Symposium

The International Association for Food Protection in collaboration with the International Life Sciences Institute Europe, the Society for Applied Microbiology and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations - hosted IAFP's EuropeanSymposium May 18-20, 20 I I at the ReeHorst Hotel in Ede, The Netherlands. Over 240 people attended the conference.
The conference opened with a welcome address from Wim Schreuders, Inspector General, Food and Consumer Products Safety Authority, The Netherlands. Arie Havelaar, Deputy Head of the Laboratory for Zoonoses and Environmental Microbiology, National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), The Netherlands, delivered the keynote lecture, "Global Burden of Foodborne Disease:' Renowned invited speakers presented
over 40 presentations, on topics including Review of Outbreaks, Emerging Risks in Food, Foodborne Viruses, Risk Assessment and Food Safety Initiatives.
More than 70 posters were displayed and presented, and 18 technical presentations took place. One technical presentation and one poster won the student competition. The winners were lnge Van der Linden, Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research, Belgium and Era Taludhar, Wageningen University, The Netherlands.
Twenty-three companies shared their food safety expertise through innovative displays and demonstrations at the exhibition hall. Exhibitors and sponsors helped by financially supporting the symposium. IAFP thanks the Organizing Committee chaired by Dr.Stefano Colombo, for the time and effort taken to plan this excellent conference and to the outstanding companies on whose generosity IAFP depends when seeking to extend its mission of facilitating food safety communications around the world.
