IAFP 2005 to be Held in Baltimore, Maryland
Des Moines, Iowa (December 17, 2004) The International Association
for Food Protection will hold IAFP 2005, the 92nd Annual Meeting
from August 14-17, 2005 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel
in Baltimore, Maryland. The meeting has earned recognition as the
leading food safety conference. Registration information will be
available in January on the Association Web site, www.foodprotection.org.
The preliminary program will be available in February 2005.
To provide food safety professionals worldwide with a forum to
exchange information on protecting the food supply, IAFP 2005 will
feature approximately 26 symposia, 75 technical and 250 poster presentations.
During the four-day meeting, the conference will include a business
meeting, committee meetings, educational exhibits, an awards banquet,
and a number of social events. Four pre-meeting workshops will also
be presented.
Media and Sample Preparation, Food Safety Objectives, Microarray
Technology, Safety of Raw Milk Cheeses, Outbreaks in the Past Year,
Dairy Regulation Issues, Verification Tools for Seafood, Produce
Microbiological Safety, Testing and Evaluating Multi-Use Food Contact
Surfaces, Predictive Models, Risk Profiling and Risk Ranking, Managing
the Risk of Listeria monocytogenes at Retail, Food Toxicology, Food
Allergens, Global Water Concerns, and Performance Based Food Safety
are just a few of the challenges that will be discussed throughout
the educational sessions.
The International Association for Food Protection is a non-profit
educational association of food protection professionals dedicated
to the education and service of its Members, specifically, as well
as industry personnel. The Association provides Members with an
information network and forum for professional improvement through
its two scientific journals, Journal of Food Protection and Food
Protection Trends, educational Annual Meeting, and interaction with

IAFP 2005 Call for Abstracts
Des Moines, Iowa (October 28, 2004) The International Association
for Food Protection is now accepting abstracts for IAFP 2005 to
be held in Baltimore, Maryland, August 14-17, 2005. The deadline
for submissions is January 12, 2005. IAFP accepts abstracts online
or via E-mail. Call for Abstracts (Submission Form, General Information
and Instructions), Speaker Reference Guide, Policy for Commercialism
and information on the Developing Scientist Awards Competition are
available at our Web site, www.foodprotection.org.
Poster or oral presentation formats are available. Abstracts are
limited to 250 words and must report the results of original research
pertinent to the subject matter. Papers may also report subject
matter of an educational and/or nontechnical nature. The Program
Committee will evaluate abstracts submitted for IAFP 2005 for acceptance.
Information in the abstract data must not have been previously published
in a copyrighted journal.
With a reputation for quality content, the Annual Meeting features
over 500 technical, posters and symposia presentations, detailing
current information on a variety of topics relating to food safety.
The quantity and quality of presentations provide information on
the latest methods and technologies available. Top industry, academic
and government food safety professionals attend each meeting. This
broad mix of more than 1,600 attendees includes professionals in
quality control, processing operations, regulatory inspections,
consulting groups, risk assessment, research and development, microbiological
research, plant management, technical services and HACCP management.

Glass Assumes Presidency of IAFP
Des Moines, Iowa (August 31, 2004) Kathleen A. Glass, Assistant
Scientist at the University of Wisconsin Food Research Institute,
assumed the presidency of IAFP in August.
Dr. Glass earned her Doctorate in Food Microbiology and Safety
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and holds a B.S. in Biology,
Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire,
and M.S. in Microbiology from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb,
IL. She joined the Food Research Institute in 1985 where she designs
and coordinates microbial challenge studies and assists the food
industry in developing formulation-safe foods. Dr. Glass has been
a Member of IAFP and its Wisconsin Affiliate (WAFP) since 1990.
She has served on many committees and has organized and chaired
numerous Annual Meeting symposia as well as presented technical
papers. In addition, Dr. Glass has served as president of WAFP and
chair of the Wisconsin Joint Educational Conference.

Record Attendance for IAFP 2004
Des Moines, Iowa (August 31, 2004) IAFP 2004 once again exceeded
expectations with record attendance of more than 1,580 attendees
who gathered at the J. W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort in Phoenix,
Arizona, August 8-11 for the three-day meeting. The international
audience of food safety professionals represented 32 countries,
47 states, and eight Canadian provinces along with 110 companies
exhibiting equipment and services supporting food science and safety.
Dr. Martin B. Cole, Chief Research Scientist at Food Science Australia
in North Ryde, New South Wales, Australia opened IAFP 2004 on Sunday
evening with the Ivan Parkin Lecture entitled Advanced Food
Protection Technology.
The following three days included a well-diversified program of
over 500 presentations including 27 symposia, 76 technical and 249
poster presentations. Sessions ranged from Foodborne Disease Outbreaks,
Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, Quorum Sensing and Food Safety,
Food Toxicology, Safety of Raw Milk Cheeses, Mycobacterium paratuberculosis,
Retail Food Safety Risks, and many others. The Inaugural John H.
Silliker Lecture on Tuesday afternoon featured R. Bruce Tompkin,
Retired Vice President of Product Safety for ConAgra Refrigerated
Foods. Three pre-meeting workshops were also conducted to provide
additional educational opportunities for attendees.
IAFPs Awards Banquet honored excellence in food safety by
presenting 19 awards to individuals and organizations. The evening
concluded with the gavel presentation to Incoming President, Kathleen
Glass.
IAFP 2005 will be held in Baltimore, Maryland, August 14-17, 2005.
